Temple Beth Abraham’s Adult Education Committee creates a rich array of classes and events for adult learners. Events include two ongoing Book Clubs, weekly Mah Jongg and Canasta games, Torah study with Rabbi Holtz, and a Women’s Circle program.

This month’s movie: The Jewish Cardinal
The amazing true story of Jean-marie Lustiger, the son of Polish-Jewish immigrants to France, who maintained his cultural identity as a Jew even after converting to Catholicism at a young age, and later joining the priesthood. Quickly rising within the ranks of the Church, Lustiger was appointed Archbishop of Paris by Pope Jean Paul II, and found a new platform to celebrate his dual identity as a Catholic Jew, earning him friends and enemies from both groups. When Carmelite nuns start building a convent within the cursed walls of Auschwitz, Lustiger finds himself a mediator between the two communities – and may be forced at last to choose his side.

In April 1944, Rudolf Vrba became the first Jew to break out of Auschwitz. He did it to reveal the truth of the death camp to the world—and to warn the last Jews of Europe what fate awaited them at the end of the railway line.

Jewish Jazz Musicians with Marshall Zucker

There have been a number of great Jewish Jazz musicians who played a leadership role in American Jazz. This program will focus on those musicians.
Marshall Zucker is a retired Principal and Teacher from the Elmont School District. He is currently a Hebrew School Educator on Long Island. He plays the vibraphone and has performed with bands in his younger days. Now Marshall enjoys performing for his little granddaughter, Maddyn. Marshall has a wealth of information on the subject of Jazz that he would like to share with us.

Cantor Lauren Phillips Fogelman: Dances with Timbrels: Women in the Passover Story
Gain new perspective for your Passover seder by exploring the stories of women who made their mark during the time of the Exodus. We’ll examine teachings from feminist Haggadahs, learn a few songs, and discover the real story behind the modern tradition of adding an orange to our seder plate.
TBA’s Cantor Lauren is passionate about making Jewish traditions relevant and meaningful for today’s generation. She is excited to teach and learn from you as we elevate the role of women in our Passover story, through the customs, recipes and songs we share with each other.

Torah Study takes place in person in the Michael Karnes Conference Center at Temple Beth Abraham and on Zoom.
For Zoom links, please email info@tba-ny.org by the Tuesday prior at noon.
The class goes at its own pace through the Five Books of Moses (Torah), The Prophets (N’Vi’Im), and Writings (K’tuvim) (T-N-K or Tanakh) in English. You do not need to have previous knowledge of Torah, and you may join in at any point in the cycle.
There is no fee to attend.
